I. Spotlight: AI Vs. Hearing Loss: The Battle That's Transforming Millions Of Lives⚔️
It was a visit my grandfather dreaded. Unfortunately for him, he had to make this trip every few weeks. Approaching his 80s, my grandfather struggled with hearing loss and turned to hearing aids for relief.
But his hopes were dashed in every visit to the audiologist, for he couldn’t find a device that solved his hearing problem. Every new hearing aid he tried increased his frustration and amplified his feeling of isolation and disconnection from the world.
Sitting in the clinic, I used to watch the audiologist fit another device or tweak settings yet again. Often, my grandfather shook his head in desperation. In rare instances, his face lit up when a device hit the right chord and connected him to the world. But these episodes were short-lived.
In just a few hours after the visit, he was back to feeling frustrated and helpless. Watching how hearing loss pulled my grandfather away from family and friends, creating a significant void towards the end of his life, was heartbreaking.
Twenty years later, millions worldwide continue to live with many of the same challenges. WHO estimates that over 5% of the world’s population, or 430 million people, suffer from hearing loss.
It has the biggest impact on elders, with one in four people over 60 impacted by hearing loss. This is projected only to get worse. By 2050, hearing loss could impact one in ten people, including millions of children and young adults.
